What is sanctification?

The believers that Paul wrote to, especially in Corinth, was surrounded by immorality that crept its way into the church (1 Cor. 5). Paul wanted believers to know that this was not okay. He also wanted them to know that if they do not live a lifestyle of holiness, how could unbelievers recognize them as Christ followers. Paul wanted the believers in Corinth to know the importance of their inner being, and how sanctification sets them apart from the culture around them (2 Cor. 4:16). This exact same principle can be applied to Christians today.

Sanctification leads us to the will, the way, and heart of the Father. As believers, our purpose is to please God in everything that we do (2 Cor. 5:9; Gal. 5:16-24; Col. 1.10; Romans 14:13-23).

Therefore, we must be sensitive to the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9). This means we should never ignore or dismiss the leading of the Holy Spirit (Eph. 4:30). The Holy Spirit is collectively guiding all of us into obedience to God’s Word AND giving each of us individual convictions based on our own capacities, limitations, and restraints so we can remain under the hands of God.

What do I mean by this?

There are commandments that God has given all Christians to follow and abide by. These are essential to the faith, so we can be covered and protected under the hands of God. With this being said, there are also non essential things of the faith that are matters of indifference. These are activities or beliefs that are not clearly stated in the Bible as right or wrong, therefore it is up to the individual on if it should or should not be a practice in their life.

I say all that to say: If something is a sin to you, based on your triggers or restraints, do not partake in it (Romans 14:23). Do not entertain, consume, or do anything that leaves you disobeying the Spirit of God. Keep your conscience clear of anything that can cause doubt or uneasiness in your devotion with Christ.

Be so in tune with the Holy Spirit that your immediate reaction is to obey Him despite what it looks like.

Trust me, this is not something that happens overnight. Matter a fact, sanctification is a daily choice.

But just because it is challenging, does not mean it is impossible!

Below are three ways that can help you along your journey:

  1. Get in community! Paul talks about the importance of community when it comes to spiritual formation. When you are in godly community, sanctification and holiness are contagious.
  2. Give yourself grace. God gives us grace, therefore we should give ourselves grace (Eph. 2:8-9).
  3. Pray out the Word of God. Find verses that will edify you on your journey of sanctification. When temptation comes, the Word of God is something that you will need to stand on. As someone who struggles with lust, I pray out Galatians 5:16-26 at least 3-4 times a week to build my Spirit up.
